Cleaning My Tetra Whisper 30

I would like to know how to go about cleaning my Tetra Whisper 30. I have a 20 gallon high. The filter uses filter bags instead of bio rings. Really want an Aquaclear 70 but I can't get that right now so I'm wondering how to clean this one. I know most of the bb is in the filter. It has the black sponge alone with the filter bag in it which can been in it for 2 weeks since i've last changed it. What would be my best option there isn't much gunk in the tubes yet so not going to clean those yet but what about my filter bad and sponge do I clean them both or what should I do?
Hop...
Didn't know Tetra made a 30. They make 10, 20 and 40.

The 10 has a bottom piece that you can just pull off to get to the insides, so you can clean. The 40 has a couple of screws under the filter that have to be removed so you can clean everything. See if there's something like this on the 30.

More conceded about the filter bag should I switch for a new one or not or what to do with it and the sponge too. The cleaning I believe the bottom can be either screwed or come off for that cleaning and the tubes can detach.Hop...The 10 has a bottom piece that you can just pull off to get to the insides, so you can clean. I replace the bags and carbon every two weeks, when I change most of the water in these tanks. The chemical medium (carbon) is only good for this long, so I just replace the bag and put in new carbon.

What is the carbon? I just have the bags and the black sponge is the carbon you're talking about the black sponge or something you have?Hop...I replace the bags and carbon every two weeks, when I change most of the water in these tanks. Oh wow I'm dumb, I've got biological media inside them.Carbon is a chemical filtration usually kept in bags and looks like black gravel, it is only useful for about two weeks after which it requires changing. What is inside your filter bags, a biological media eg ceramic rings, discs or spheres? The sponge doesn't need replacing unless it is completely battered and useless if it is just dirty with gunk rinse it in the tank water you remove during a water change.

Wait I'm not sure if it is spheres might actually be that, would I do the same with that too?Not dumb at all, you can just rinse both in tank water to clean them, nothing else required

It's in a white bag, I will get one of my new filter bag and check what's in it to tell you exactly so I know what to do when I'm changing or cleaning it. Hopefully tomorrow been in there 2 weeksCan you tell what colour it is? most ceramic media is a cream colour once covered in beneficial bacteria and is often rough in texture.

best done when doing a water change....as with any Filter cleaning...
I rinse the sponge in the bucket of water from the wc...and usually replace the bag as it gets pretty gnarly after awhile....but I don't throw out the sponge, just a rinse and reuse....but the bags I replace....

Thanks so much that what I figured I had to do. I will syphon my gravel, perform a water change, and clean the filter, change the bag, and clean the sponge tomorrow thanks for the help all I needed.I resurfaced a tetra whisper 30...use it as a second on my 40....cleaning the filter is quick....
